Rene almost creates big upset v’s S.A. No 1
After a long twelve month absence from the junior squash scene, Rene van der Westhuizen came back in full force this season. The questions I was asked were, “do you think Rene could come back?” or “Surely she was out for too long to even think of making top ten”. My answer was that it did not matter what everybody thought, but what did Rene think. Well the critics got a taste of those questions when Rene upset Raquel at the Free State open and finishing top 10 at the S.A. closed. Rene had a humdinger of a tournament in P.E. by loosing a narrow contested battle against the No 1 seed Kaycee-Lee Dodd. With Rene getting back to her best, she challenged the IPT tournament held in Bloemfontein with a lot of determination. Although Rene lost to Kaycee-Lee 2-3 and 12/10 in the fifth, she was positive against Maryka Coetzee and Raquel Le Roux to finish a worthy 6th place.
